About Jon

Dr. Jonathan A.D. Fisher joined CFER as a research scientist in the fall of 2011. Prior to this, Jon was a postdoctoral fellow concurrently in the Department of Biology at Queen's University and in the Ocean Sciences Division at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. Jon has ongoing collaborations within CFER, with DFO, DFA, the FFAW, and other national and international colleagues. Research funding is provided by NSERC, DFA, and RDC. Three of his graduate students are currently supported by RDC Ocean Industry Student Research Awards.

Jon recieved his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a Master of Science (Biology) from Dalhousie University, and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in biology from Queen’s University. Jon's cross-appointment to Memorial University's Department of Biology facilitates graduate student opportunities and fosters interactions within Memorial University's research community.

PhD Students

Brynn Devine

Originally from Texas, she completed her Bachelor of science in marine biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston. She then received her Master of science in marine biology at James Cook University in Townsville, Australia where she studied the effects of ocean acidification on habitat selection in coral reef fishes.  Brynn is currently investigating how ocean conditions, caused by regional to global climate change, impact the biogeography, dynamics and behaviour of deep-sea continental slope fishes. This research is supported by an RDC Ocean Industries Student Research Award.

Kyle Krumsick

Kyle joined CFER as a Masters student, focusing on cod diet in Newfoundland and Labrador and how it varies with space, time and climate change. Kyle's doctoral work now brings these principles to an ecosystem level, where he is studying species interactions and food web modeling for the northeast coast of Newfoundland and southern Labrador. This research is supported by an RDC Ocean Industries Student Research Award. Originally from Eugene, Oregon, he completed his Bachelor's degree in marine biology from the University of Oregon.

Masters Students

Hilary Rockwood

Hilary is a St. John’s, Newfoundland native who completed her Bachelor of science in marine biology at the University of California at Santa Cruz with a focus on predator-prey interactions in rocky intertidal ecosystems. She also spent a portion of her undergraduate career in Queensland, Australia studying ecology and paleontology.

Hilary's masters work involves the diets and spatial distributions of gadoids in southern Newfoundland waters under changing ocean conditions driven by both global climate change and climate cycles. This research is supported by an RDC Ocean Industries Student Research Award.
